Oakley Johns scores Top-10 finish in Gateway Dirt Nationals prelim
Coming off a pair of Super Late Model victories, Oakley Johns rolled into The Dome at America's Center (St. Louis, Mo.) on Thursday afternoon for his preliminary night of the Gateway Dirt Nationals.
With a strong field of 66 Super Late Models on hand, Johns didn't record a great qualiyfying lap but made up for it in his heat race by charging from sixth-to-second. Starting 10th in the $5,000-to-win prelim, Oakley passed four competitors to finish just outside the Top-5 in sixth.
Oakley started his qualifier from the pole on Saturday and was in position to make the $30,000-to-win finale before tangling with another competitor. Johns finished eighth and did not make the main event.
